Big expansion project planned for Hurley's
...
The project will create 6,000 square feet of additional space at the supermarket, expanding its size to 20,000 square feet, said Nick Hurley, general manager of Hurley's Supermarkets.
The project is being done "to provide better service for our customers, to allow the store to sell more product, and to make a better shopping environment," Hurley said.
"It will be very exciting when it (is complete)," he said.
The construction project has been planned for five years, he said.
"We're completely renovating the existing store space, with new shelving, coolers, lights, ceiling tiles, floor tiles, everything," he said.
The construction project began last week and is expected to be completed in mid-May, he said.
"Based on our projections, my guesstimate is that there will be 15 to 20 more jobs" created at the store as a result of the project, he said.
He said he hoped that even more jobs would be created at the supermarket in the future.
The store will remain open during the entire construction project, and will be open the same hours then as before, he said.
"A lot of the work will be done at night," Hurley said."We'll re-open in the morning. That way we won't interfere with the customers."
All of the products that are normally sold at the supermarket will continue to be available during the construction project, he said.
The project will lengthen the store's aisles and add an additional aisle, Hurley said.
"The additional space will allow us to add more product in just about every category," he said.
The project will double the size of the produce area, and there will be a full-service meat counter with a full-time butcher to custom-cut meats for customers, he said.
The project includes two additions, the main one at the back of the store, he said. The second addition will create a glass foyer in the middle of the front of the store, which will become the new entrance to the store, he said. Also, as part of the project, three walk-in coolers will be moved outside the building, which will free up more space inside the building, he said.
Currently, the coolers take up a lot of room in the store, he said.
The construction project will allow the store to sell many new products, especially in the produce, deli, bakery and meat departments, he said.
Hurley declined to discuss the cost of the construction project. The supermarket is located on U.S. Route 6 in Colonial Plaza.
