The 80-mile motorcycle ride, together with last year's Fallen Heroes Ride, raised a total of $15,000 for local charities, said Nick Hurley, general manager of Hurley's supermarkets, which sponsored the ride.

While it had rained the night before, it did not rain during the ride itself, said Nick Hurley, one of the main organizers of the ride.
    ...
The $15,000 raised by the last two Fallen Heroes Rides will be donated to Abuse and Rape Crisis Center, the Youth Hunter Education Challenge in Rome, the Towanda Police Department, the Wysox Emergency Medical Services, and the Bradford County Sheriffs' Department, said Nick Hurley, general manager of Hurley's supermarkets.

There are several more charitable organizations that will receive a share of the money, but it has not yet been determined which ones they will be, Hurley said.

The money donated to the sheriff's department will be used toward the purchase of Tasers, Hurley said.

Among the sponsors of the ride who gave cash donations this year were the Hurley family, Henry Dunn Inc., Gannon Associates, Bozzutos Wholesale out of Connecticut, DeArmond Bit Service, and Beck Oldfield Supply Inc., Hurley said.

Hannum's Harley-Davidson of Media, Pa., donated many door prizes for the riders, he said.

The Hurley's Hometown Dollar store, which opened in September 2006, is being sold to the Family Dollar chain of discount stores, said Nick Hurley, general manager of the Hurley's companies.

"This is great news for everybody," Hurley said.

Family Dollar will be constructing an addition onto the back of the building to increase the size of the 6,500 square-foot store, Hurley said.

"I think the addition is 2,000 square feet," Hurley said.

Hurley's Hometown Dollar will remain open at the site until March 15, Hurley said.

Family Dollar plans to completely renovate the interior of the store, said Hurley. He said he believes the renovation will begin around shortly around March 15.

Ground will be broken for the addition probably next week, he said.

A Family Dollar had been located in the building until the summer of 2006.

But the Family Dollar had moved out because it was planning to relocate to another location along U.S. Route 6 in North Towanda Township, near 3-D's Pizza, which would have involved constructing a new building at that site.Hurley said.

However the project to construct the building near 3-D's Pizza fell through, he said.

Big expansion project planned for Hurley's
    ...
The project will create 6,000 square feet of additional space at the supermarket, expanding its size to 20,000 square feet, said Nick Hurley, general manager of Hurley's Supermarkets.

The project is being done "to provide better service for our customers, to allow the store to sell more product, and to make a better shopping environment," Hurley said.

"It will be very exciting when it (is complete)," he said.

The construction project has been planned for five years, he said.

"We're completely renovating the existing store space, with new shelving, coolers, lights, ceiling tiles, floor tiles, everything," he said.

The construction project began last week and is expected to be completed in mid-May, he said.

"Based on our projections, my guesstimate is that there will be 15 to 20 more jobs" created at the store as a result of the project, he said.

He said he hoped that even more jobs would be created at the supermarket in the future.

The store will remain open during the entire construction project, and will be open the same hours then as before, he said.

"A lot of the work will be done at night," Hurley said."We'll re-open in the morning. That way we won't interfere with the customers."

All of the products that are normally sold at the supermarket will continue to be available during the construction project, he said.

The project will lengthen the store's aisles and add an additional aisle, Hurley said.

"The additional space will allow us to add more product in just about every category," he said.

The project will double the size of the produce area, and there will be a full-service meat counter with a full-time butcher to custom-cut meats for customers, he said.

The project includes two additions, the main one at the back of the store, he said. The second addition will create a glass foyer in the middle of the front of the store, which will become the new entrance to the store, he said. Also, as part of the project, three walk-in coolers will be moved outside the building, which will free up more space inside the building, he said.

Currently, the coolers take up a lot of room in the store, he said.

The construction project will allow the store to sell many new products, especially in the produce, deli, bakery and meat departments, he said.

Hurley declined to discuss the cost of the construction project. The supermarket is located on U.S. Route 6 in Colonial Plaza.
