Alan Humphrey of the EPA Environmental Response Team said the EPA will be collecting soil samples and testing different oxidation treatments in a lab over the next few weeks.The dilapidated structure on the property, a former machine shop, will be demolished after the EPA removes all hazardous materials from the building, Humphrey said."We know the concentration of the contamination and the affected area," Humphrey said.

Although trace levels of some chemicals probably related to the spill were found, none was present in levels the EPA considers hazardous, says Alan Humphrey, an EPA scientist in New Jersey who oversaw the investigation.

"It appears that an adequate cleanup was conducted," he says, noting that more than 1,000 yards of soil were excavated in the aftermath of the derailment.

About 25 residents showed up for the public meeting Tuesday night in the lunchroom of Alberton Elementary School.Many left with unanswered questions.

"Experienced operators can pick out the trees and stumps," said Alan Humphrey, a sonar operator with EPA."You may have to do a little adjusting, twiddle the dials, but you can see them."
