Ching Yao Hsieh

Ching Yao Hsieh , 84 , an emeritus professor of economics at George Washington University , died of pneumonia Oct. 20 at his Washington home.He had dementia.
Dr. Hsieh , who retired in 1987 , taught courses that included graduate studies in the history of economic thought.He had lived in Washington since 1954 , when he was appointed an alternative director for Taiwan at the International Monetary Fund.
He received master's and doctoral degrees in economics from GWU and began teaching there in 1961.Later in his career , he was given a professor of the year award from the university's Interfraternity Council.
Dr. Hsieh was born in Bejing.He was a graduate of St. John's University in Shanghai , where he taught history as a young man..He worked for the Central Bank of China on the mainland and in Taiwan before coming to this country.
Survivors include his wife , Linda Hsieh of Washington ; two children , Bernadine Bowersox and Robert Hsieh , both of Rockville ; two brothers ; four grandchildren ; and four great-grandchildren.
