Sophia Howlett received her BA in Literature from St John's, Cambridge, and her Ph.D. in Renaissance Philosophy and Drama from York University (UK).After teaching at York University, she was appointed in 1990 to a temporary lectureship at the University of Teesside.She was made a permanent lecturer in 1992.In 1994, whilst on sabbatical, Dr Howlett became a visiting lecturer with Civic Education Project (CEP) in Ukraine, teaching at the National University of Kiev Mohyla Academy and Kiev State University and guest lecturing throughout Ukraine.She also acted as Academic Co-ordinator for the CEP Ukraine Programme.In 1995, Dr Howlett joined CEP's staff as the Country Director for Ukraine.In this capacity, she founded CEP's Moldova programme.After leaving CEP, Dr Howlett worked with OSI Russia in the Kaliningrad region, performing a needs assessment for Higher Education and non-governmental organisations.Whilst in Kaliningrad, she taught for Kaliningrad State University and guest lectured throughout the Baltic.Finally, in 1997, she joined Central European University as the Director of a new unit to oversee and develop CEU's External Programmes.The unit developed rapidly and in 1999, she was appointed Dean of Special and Extension Programmes.Dr Howlett also teaches at CEU for the Gender and Culture Programme.
