HOWELL, SAMUEL PORTER, 75, of North Shelby County, died Monday, June 7, 2004.Mr. Howell was retired from Porter Howell Companies, his residential and office construction business.Born and raised in Marion, Alabama, he was a graduate of Marion Military Institute and Auburn University.He was appointed assistant director, State of Alabama Planning and Industrial Development Council in 1959 under Governor John Patterson.Mr. Howell moved his family to the Birmingham area to pursue a career in insurance and real estate sales, and went on to found Porter Howell Companies.He was a member of numerous civic and builders organizations and a long time member of Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church.Mr. Howell was preceded in death by his father and mother, Dr. John V. and Marguerite P. Howell; brother, John V. Howell III; sister, Kittie Jean Howell; and several aunts, uncles and a nephew.
