Steve began climbing at a young age, driving from his home in eastern Oregon to Smith Rocks as soon as he had a driving license.
On a year-long student exchange in Slovenia Steve learned about moving fast and light in the mountains.
He returned to the US with a decidedly non-American perspective about alpine climbing that eventually turned the status quo on its ear.
Steve is often quoted as having stated that, "the simpler we make things, the richer the experience becomes", which could describe his uncomplicated life in ten words or less.
He guides independently in the summer and works as the snow safety officer for North Cascade Heli Skiing in the winter.
Lately he's been seen driving a 1985 Ford Custom van with velour headliner, bouncing hula girl on the dashboard, and shag carpeting through out around the Western US and Canada. WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get).
Steve is a professional mountain guide living in Mazama, Washington who, through training and hard work, has risen to the top of both his respective fields; alpine climbing and mountain guiding.
Through North Cascade Mountain Guides and his IFMGA Certification he leads climbs in the North Cascades, Canadian Rockies, Alaska, the Alps, and the Himalaya.
If you want to climb with a guide who is at the top of both the guiding and climbing fields, you will want to climb with Steve.
The Professional Guide
Steve began his guiding career in 1991, as a summer job, during his college years at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington.
Having just graduated with his B.S. in Ecology, he participated in one of the first professional guides courses ever held in America.
That course, and others like it, led Steve through an eight-year process to obtaining his IFMGA (International Federation of Mountain Guides

After working with several of the countries largest and best-known guide services, including Exum Mountaineering and the American Alpine Institute, Steve has joined North Cascade Mountain Guides to pursue the flexibility of private guiding.
