In addition to coursework in honors arts and honors humanities, taught by Lori Horvitz, UNC Asheville associate professor of literature and language, and Blake Hobby, UNC Asheville's Honors Program director, students visited schools to study and compare the American and British education systems and spoke with teachers and headmasters about issues mutually important.
    ...
Lori Horvitz, who served as trip director, was pleased with the experience."On the trip, students had a chance not only to experience the art and history discussed in class, but they also had a chance to prepare lessons and teach their peers about it, through lectures, discussion and group activities," Horvitz said.

ASHEVILLE - Every Thursday night during her first semester in grad school at Brooklyn College, Lori Horvitz met with her poetry instructor, Allen Ginsberg.
    ...
"He just said what was on his mind, which I was kind of afraid of, but also envious of," said Horvitz, now an assistant professor of language and literature at UNC Asheville."Just didn't care what people thought.

"He was at a point in his life where he (could tell me), `You know, this is the first time in life where I can support myself writing poetry, and ..." well, Horvitz remembers, he said there were problems with his hydraulics.
    ...
The United States' current swing rightward makes Beat poetry and prose all the more relevant to Horvitz and other performers in tonight's Beat writings performance at Black Mountain College Museum + Art Center.

"You know, Ginsberg was censored for (his poem) `Howl,' and he took it to court and won," Horvitz said.

I was incredibly hesitant to enter into this women's studies class because of all the negative feedback I've heard about Lori (plus, the class meets once a week for nearly 3 hours). Here's some things people leave out: -She's incredibly laid back -She has a (dry) sense of humor -She encourages debates within the class -She seemed genuinely concerned as to whether or not the assigned reading was too much -I haven't heard her openly give her opinion ... ever.Considering that it's a women's studies class, it isn't difficult to figure out that she is of the liberal mindset, but all this "feminazi" talk is crap.Several girls in our class have even kidded her about not giving her opinion. This is only the 3rd week of classes, and as the semester progresses I may find that I feel differently about her.
    ...
Lori Horvitz has got to be the most un-intelligent, unqualified professor to ever roam the earth. Not only does her personality scare the hell out of me, she has the IQ of a kindergartener. She was constantly deragatory towards any input most students gave and seemed to enjoy showing them up in front of the class.DO NOT TAKE THIS Lori WHORE-VITZ.
    ...
The thing I learned most from Horvitz about creative non-fiction was that non-fiction cannot be interesting unless you add kinky or wild fiction to it!
    ...
I cannot even wrap my head around the fact that Dr. Horvitz has such a low average on this site. What is wrong with you people???YES, she is a feminist, that's a GOOD THING..... and those of you calling her a feminazi have obviously never met a real feminazi, that's all I have to say.Even in this class, Representations of the Holocaust in Art, she never really got political (though students felt free to do so frequently).God, after reading all these comments I went into the class expecting her to be tearing male students apart limb from limb... and she turns out to be this REALLY sweet, kind woman who respected everyone and was QUITE fair in her grading. She's really funny after awhile too, if you appreciate her sense of humor, which I did.And very, very intelligent... take her and use her as the great resource she could be, if only these ridiculous comments would stop scaring people away...
    ...
Horvitz got something over a one star???Holy crap!I think this woman logged on and writes her own five star praises!Note to all...do not listen to anyone who gives this lady over a one star (and whether she even deserves that is a matter of how much you pity her!) I digress, anyway, do not listen to anyone who gives this woman over one star...they are manipulative and will lie to you!If you don't do things the way she wants them then it's "No Soup for You!"
    ...
Take Horvitz if you like things like books, appreciate a challenge and actually find class interesting.I was scared to take her classes because of what your flaming pie holes had to say about her, and I was pleased to discover how much of it was unfair projection. If ANYTHING, she lets people who don't know what they're talking about have the floor, and even then she's supportive.Get over yourselves.
    ...
Second, Horvitz is awesome.I took her for a workshop in a genre that was a bit fuzzy for me, and the work that I did for her ended up being some of the best that I have ever written.Horvitz is really good at drawing out the core of meaning behind a first draft, and helping you to hone in on that and refine it.She's not afraid to make radical suggestions about structure, and that may make some people uncomfortable. Many writers like to hold on to their ideas for dear life, and detest the thought of starting over in a new direction.I know this because I am one of those writers. But I learned how to let go of that and really take some risks with my writing. It was more work, but I learned more about what it really means to be a writer here than in any other creative writing class.I definately recommend this class with Horvitz if you're serious about writing.
    ...
Lori Horvitz has to be one of the worst...no I take that back. She is the worst professor I have ever had in the Creative Writing Department. If you are not a suckass or nazi feminist, you will automatically be on her shit list. She is the type of professor that does not belong in a liberal arts institute of higher learning.I attended class and did every single assingnment - turned them in one time no less.Yet, simply because she is small-minded and did not like the masculine content of my writing and my outspoken viewpoints on related matters, she docks my grade under the guise of "lack of participation"!Anyone in that class can testify to the fact that I never did not participate. In addition, Ms. Horvitz has a complete lack of knowledge regarding writing and the teaching of said subject matter. She gave shitty suggestions for people's fiction, was bitchy and derogative, she made us read that nazi Ayn Rand and she lacked a single iota of genuine personality. She even anonymously distributed her own sucky writing for us to read! This was evident in her distribution of sample pieces to read that contained no author's name and was often referred to as "a friend's writing."
    ...
There's something about Prof. Horvitz that really polarizes people, as the numerous 1s and 5s will attest to.The word around campus is that women love her and men hate her.I guess I'm an exception.I neither loved nor hated her.She seemed pretty competant, if not confident.I got a lot out of the class. And can't really complain.

I've found that Prof. Horvitz can sometimes really rub me the wrong way, and I think thats what turns a lot of people off to her, but I've found that if you take any abrasiveness in stride, she's really rather hip.
    ...
Nope, it's Lori Horvitz! She's the sort of prof that sends righties into apoplectic fits, lefties into idealogical tremors of orgasmic pleasure, and intelligent folks into uncontrollable eye rolling.
    ...
I thought that Professor Horvitz is a great teacher.I liked her playing the devil's advocate. It's a good way to look at things from different perspectives.I thought that she did a great job teaching my english class and I recommend her for everyone. She's awesome and not hard to get along with.Show up for her classes, do your papers on time, and speak up a little in class and you'll be set and you'll have fun too!
    ...
I am not really into english, but so far this class has been ok, Prof. Horvitz is a really nice person and easy to talk to, and though she tends to play the devils advocate in a lot of class discussions, it puts things into a new perspective and makes the class interesting and sometimes very humourous ... as long as you do you assignments on time and show up to class you will do fine as well as jump into class discussions every once in awhile..this is one class i never get sleepy in i can tell you that much:)
    ...
I have had two classes with Lori, both of which I felt were enjoyable, constructive experiences. At first, I did feel somewhat confused by her personality, as she cannot be stereotyped easily; she is unique. However, once I began to talk to her and to observe her responses in class, I grew to like her quite a bit.She is approachable, and I have never observed her to be harsh in her criticisms.
    ...
Lori's really hands-off, but she does a good job of facilitating class discussion. She can brutal when she wants, but I haven't seen much of that directed at people who can do the reading and know how they want to write and are willing to work at it.
