    alter Harry Horvitz of South Dartmouth , a retired liquor distributor , died Friday at St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford of natural causes.He was 79.

    Mr. Horvitz , a lifelong resident of New Bedford and South Dartmouth , graduated from New Bedford High School and the College of William & Mary.While attending William & Mary , he was a member of the tennis team , swim team , and the marching band.

    After college , he entered the Navy , where he attended Harvard College to secure training as a naval supply officer.He served in the Pacific theater during World War II aboard the USS General Patrick.

    He owned Union Liquors Co..Inc , a company founded by his father in the mid-1930s.He was the vice president for 33 years.

    An avid songwriter and a member of the American Society of Composers , Authors and Publishers , Mr. Horvitz composed and performed a broad repertoire that included gospel , love songs , ballads , patriotic music , folk songs , and Broadway-style show tunes.His spiritual ''Lift Up Your Eyes To The Mountains'' was sung by gospel singer Mahalia Jackson for Louis Armstrong's 70th birthday at the Newport Jazz Festival.

    Mr. Horvitz was a member of Tifereth Israel Congregation , the Jewish Community Center , a founding member of the former Temple Sinai in New Bedford , and a contributor to the New Bedford Jewish Convalescent Home.He also was a member of the Masonic Temple and was a Shriner.Mr. Horvitz was a member of the Jewish War Veterans , and the American Legion , and a charter member of the Allendale Country Club.

    He leaves his wife Maxine ( Brenner ) of South Dartmouth ; two sons , Ronald Brenner of Gloucester , and Andrew Steven of Boston ; a sister , Eleanor Levine of South Dartmouth ; and two grandchildren.

    A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at Tifereth Israel Congregation , New Bedford.Burial will follow in Plainville Cemetery.
