Meghan Holmes, a Thamesville native and master's student in York University's environmental studies program, has volunteered to head up the project.
"There appears to be a great deal of interest on the part of area farmers," she said."We'd like to hear from those wanting to rent space at the market by June 20."
Holmes said the market will feature local producers and a variety of agricultural products including fresh fruits and vegetables, preserves, baked goods, honey, maple syrup, eggs and meat.
"The Chatham market will address the ever-increasing popularity of farmers' markets throughout Ontario and the rest of Canada," she said.
Holmes said the farmers' market will provide an economic incentive for both farmers and consumers to participate in direct sales and create socially productive, face-to-face interactions.
"The ready availability of fresh, locally grown produce will encourage a healthier and more nutritious lifestyle," she said.
Holmes said the farmers' market is a joint project of the BIA and South West Agri Development.
She said the idea behind the project is to promote local business, support agriculture in the areas and foster direct farmer-to-consumer relationships.
