Money dispersed to AUSA was for family members to travel to attend burials of soldiers killed in Operation Iraqi Freedom and for families to travel to Walter Reed Army Medical Center to be with soldiers severely injured in the war, said Maureen Hollenbeck, AUSA Tennessee-Kentucky chapter director.
Hollenbeck said AUSA also received money to help the family of a Kentucky National Guard soldier injured in active-duty training.
In most cases, Hollenbeck said, family members try to go through other established Army service organizations, including the Army Emergency Relief fund. She said often her office is involved after those avenues fail or in situations where a quick reaction is needed.
"It comes back to us," she said. "We're faster. In some situations, they need to get there tonight. We can't wait for a grant to come in."
Hollenbeck said she attends the Operation Eagle's Nest board meeting once a month to request reimbursement for funds paid out to family members.
AUSA verifies all information submitted in requests for emergency funding, she said.
