Former President John R. Holland with the Lord
    ...
Not surprising to any who knew Dr. Holland, large numbers are expected to attend the memorial service, and there is limited parking available at Angelus Temple.

Therefore, the location of the service has been changed to The Church on the Way, West Campus.

Late in the afternoon of Tuesday, October 2, 2007, Dr. John R. Holland entered into the presence of the Lord.He had been ill with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, better known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease.Dr. Holland is survived by his wife, Doris; their four children, Bradley, Johnnea, Barton and JoAnna; and several grandchildren.

Dr. Holland was born and reared in Texas and was converted in the Foursquare church in Hamlin, Texas.Following his graduation from high school, he traveled to Los Angeles to attend Life Pacific College (formerly called LIFE Bible College). While in college he met and married Doris Hines, and, after their graduation from Bible college in 1953, they began their ministry, which would span more than five decades.

For 11 years the Hollands pastored Foursquare churches in Idaho, Washington and Oregon; they moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, where they pastored the Kingsway church for 10 years.During that period, Dr. Holland also served for five years as the district supervisor of Western Canada. In 1974 the Hollands returned to Los Angeles and assumed the pastorate of Angelus Temple.Following two years in that position, Dr. Holland became the supervisor of the Southwest District, a role he continued until his selection as president of The Foursquare Church in 1988.

Dr. Holland was the third president of The Foursquare Church, and he served in that role for nine years. He followed Dr. Rolf K. McPherson, who retired after serving for 44 years as president.Having been a pastor for more than two decades, in addition to having served in supervisory roles for more than 15 years, Dr. Holland was uniquely graced with the qualities needed to assume the role of serving as president at that particular time in the life of The Foursquare Church. His keen administrative skills, combined with the heart of a true shepherd, enabled him to lead the church into a period of both expansion and maturity.

After resigning from the presidency in 1997, Dr. Holland remained active in ministry even during "retirement."

Update on Former Foursquare President John Holland

Dear Ones,I am writing to invite you to pray for our brother and former president, John Holland and his dear wife, Doris. Some of you may have heard of the severe physical trial John is enduring, and with their whole family's permission I'm writing to inform you of the medical facts and their present implications.Obviously, as you will note, the purpose of my writing is foremost to prompt the prayer support of our entire movement.John has been suffering from symptoms that indicate amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), a highly life-threatening affliction more popularly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The Holland's are taking a strong position of faith regarding this physical trial and though he is being treated for ALS it is possible that his symptoms could be attributed to another cause.ALS has no detectable indicators other than the symptoms and is diagnosed by the process of elimination of all other possibilities. To give you a sense of the rate of physical deterioration John's case has met with, let me simply summarize: (1) late last Spring his legs were weakening at their lower extremities; (2) when I was with John the end of July at a conference we were both speaking at, he was dependent upon a cane; (3) I met John for lunch this autumn and at this time he was in a wheelchair; (4) his present condition is one of virtually complete immobility. As you can see, his condition is one of great concern to all who know, love and honor this man and his wife--a pair who have given us so much of themselves for a lifetime.Accordingly, I wanted our whole church family to be apprised and to reach out with every order of embrace possible--especially at Christmastime. Please let us help them by addressing any correspondence you may have to the following e-mail address.Cards or letters may be sent to the address below, but the e-mail address is one means that could vastly simplify any response the family wishes to make, and make possible and easing of some of the burden of the moment.Dr Holland@foursquare.orgDr.John and Doris Holland PO Box 26902 Los Angeles, CA 90026-0176Thank you so much.
