At the Detroit Lakes Planning Commission meeting Tuesday, Mehlhaff and John Holland gave an overview of what they have in mind.

Holland said no he hadn't been approached. He also said that they will not have a bar or restaurant in the hotel.Holland said he's not even sure when the hotel will be built due to the re-construction of Highway 10. "It's undecided.A lot has to do with the highway construction.Everything is just in the preliminary phase. These were our first steps," he said. Holland is the owner of Best Western Holland House and Suites and the Castaway Inn and Resort in Detroit Lakes, and the Best Western Superior Inn and Suites on Lake Superior, Grand Marais. The Best Western property is third generation ownership that his father started in 1953, and his daughter now runs.Holland has been acquiring property for the Lodge on the Lake for about 10 years, he said. Holland and Mehlhaff's plans include facing the rooms towards the lake to cut out some sounds from the railroad and to add the appeal of a lake view. The hotel will be three stories high, with a main level, the upstairs and the lower level as a walkout to the beach area. The total square footage of the area will be 157,987 square feet. Holland said the Lodge on the Lake that is being proposed will be similar to the Best Western in Grand Marais he owns. "It's the same type of idea," he said."This is a 66-unit property that has been awarded "Property of the Year" by the Minnesota Association of Innkeepers in 2000, and "Best of the Best" by Best Western. It's upscale, nice property, and that's that same concept we're proposing in D.L. It'll be a real asset to Detroit Lakes."

"If it's not a hotel, it would be 50 foot lots with housing, and then everyone would still have docks, boats and jet skis," Holland said.
...
"We needed to get started somewhere and we have," Holland said. The project must now be approved by the Detroit Lakes City Council.
