With new benchmark records set on a regular basis, Andrew Holdsworth, Oracle's director of real-world performance, maintains that good database performance is all about sticking to the basics
OTN: Oracle recently recaptured the single-system TPC-C benchmark record.1 What does this mean for customers?
Holdsworth: Synthetic benchmarks like TPC-C have been reduced to a marketing game.So it's great PR, sure, and shows that Oracle is still tops in the performance sweepstakes, but what really matters is the many thousands of customers who today run huge systems on our database and consistently get the performance and scalability required by their business.
OTN: Your group regularly sees the leading edge of customer performance.Do you ever have to shake your head and say, "Sorry, that's just too much of a challenge for us?"
Holdsworth: In over 10 years at Oracle, working with some of our biggest customers, I've never been let down by Oracle's ability to scale-within the boundaries of the hardware, of course.
...
Holdsworth: My motto is "stick to the basics."
...
Holdsworth: First of all, ensure good table design, create good indexes, and write good SQL.
...
Holdsworth: Keep your designs simple.
...
Holdsworth: I was responsible for creating Oracle's Performance Improvement Method, and I urge OTN Members to review it in the Oracle9i Database Performance Planning Guide.
...
Holdsworth: Yes, here are a few:
...
Holdsworth: CPU utilization is the easiest system usage statistic to understand and monitor.
...
Holdsworth: Perhaps the one thought that I would leave OTN Members with is that performance is a process, not a goal.
