Mr. Holbrook operated steam engines just before trains transitioned to diesel power.His son said he was a hard worker who was dedicated to the railroad and always came home with great stories.He also had his share of close calls, he said.
"The thing I remember most was kids throwing rocks into the windshield," his son said."It was a tough life out there.He came home with a lot of great stories about how fantastic it was."
Mr. Holbrook grew up in Biddeford and graduated from Biddeford High School.In 1952, he married the former Gloria Hilton.Mr. Holbrook also leaves four children and a stepson.

Mr. Holbrook was a member of the Masons Arundel Lodge AF & AM No. 76, the York County Shrine Club and Kora Shriners of Lewiston.

In 1989, Mr. Holbrook retired from the railroad.Shortly thereafter, he started working for Port Lobster Co. in Kennebunkport as its delivery driver.He worked there for 15 years.
