But the company's national announcement this week of Definity's broader "roll out" into select markets - as the first phase of nationwide availability - bodes well for future job openings, according to John Hogan, president of the Spectacle Lens Group.

"Implications are positive for employment," said Hogan, who declined to cite specific numbers or timetables.

Now, said Hogan, increased production will be able to keep pace with demand as the lens becomes available in about 20 percent of the country.Hogan said other production changes will allow the Spectacle Lens Group to offer "virtually all prescriptions" for progressive addition lenses as well as options such as photochromic lenses, which can be used as sunglasses because they darken when exposed to sunlight.

"All systems are go," Hogan said.
    ...
Hogan said feedback from test markets and eye-care professionals persuaded the company to simplify the product's name from Definity 2 to Definity. He said people kept asking what happened to Definity 1.

Initially, he said, the company selected the name Definity 2 to reference the lens' "dual-add technology."This feature adds near - or "reading" - power to both the front and back surfaces of the lens and is credited with reducing the distortion that bothers many wearers of progressive addition lenses.

Hogan said the company's goal is to eventually make the Definity lens "available for any presbyope in the world."And he said the company likes doing business in Roanoke.

"The quality of the employees we've been able to find has been second to none," he said.
