That was a question posed in a talk Saturday by Ralph Hodge, Olivet Nazarene University's men's basketball coach. He was the keynote speaker at the 16th annual Bourbonnais Community Prayer Breakfast at ONU. About 200 attended to Hodge say, among other things, that "Whether it's in our personal lives, our bank account or in sports; we live in a culture that is all about 'Win, win, win!'

"I think there's a lot more to be learned in life, not just from you're victories, but from your defeats as well."

Hodge, who admitted to being nervous once he reached the podium, told stories of former players, golfing and losing in the 1989 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics tournament, the first time ONU attended the tourney.

Hodge says he tried to demonstrate how the concept of winning is over-valued in society.

He spoke after the food was served and a brief concert was presented by Liberty School's 7th and 8th grade orchestra, A prayer of blessing was given by ONU's Rev. Gordon Wickersham.

    Wickersham was impressed with Hodge.

Bronke played just seven minutes in the Tigers' 66-64 loss to St. Xavier and was described as doubtful for the game by Tigers coach Ralph Hodge on Monday.
    ...
"It's sore and swollen, and he doesn't have a lot of movement, but there's no damage to the ligament," Hodge said.
    ...
"St. Xavier picked up the pressure defensively and slowed the tempo offensively, and we weren't able to answer," Hodge said."We play half a game. We're not a 40-minute team right now."

Backup point guards Dustin Rennewanz and Daniel Allen combined for five turnovers in just 18 minutes, which helped prompt Hodge to move freshman Cory Hainlen to point guard.

We got that and got confidence in everything we did in the offensive game," said Tigers' coach Ralph Hodge.

"We played hard, but not particularly well," said Olivet coach Ralph Hodge, whose team eliminated the Cougars two years ago in the Sweet 16.

"Yeah, and we had some 40 percent shooters (Paxson, son of former NBA player John Paxson, and Bronke) miss some threes, so I guess it all evens out," Hodge said.

Olivet Nazarene University men's basketball coach Ralph Hodge was back on the sideline on Saturday night, albeit in a limited capacity, after spending three days in the hospital last week.

Hodge, 54, was hospitalized early Wednesday morning after experiencing numbness on the left side of his body, Hodge said on Monday morning. He missed Olivet's game on Thursday night while undergoing a number of heart tests.

Hodge's initial stress test came back positive, but further tests didn't reveal a problem.

"The doctors said about 10 percent of stress tests come back a false-positive, and that's what it looks like it was," Hodge said.

He said he's scheduled to have more tests in the coming weeks.

Hodge has amassed 596 wins in 29 years as the Tigers' head coach.

"Just like you train in the weight room to get stronger or train on the court to become a better shooter, you have to train yourself to be focused everyday," Olivet men's coach Ralph Hodge said.

Last Saturday's 83-73 win over Indiana-South Bend was "a day in the dentist's chair" for Olivet Nazarene University men's basketball coach Ralph Hodge.
    ...
Hodge is hoping for a similar result, but the Tigers will have to get off to a quicker start.

"It doesn't get any bigger for us than this week," Hodge said.
    ...
But Hodge believes his team can beat Robert Morris, which allowed a 22-point second-half lead to be cut to two by St. Xavier last Saturday.
    ...
"They're great in the open floor, when they are getting one- and two-man opportunities," Hodge said.

It wouldn't be far-fetched for Olivet coach Ralph Hodge to blame the loss on his squad's 55- percent effort from the free- throw line, but that was just one of several aspects that kept the team from handing Georgetown its first loss of the year.

"It appears that free-throw shooting was one of our ills, but it was more than that in the second half," Hodge said.
    ...
"I don't know if their pressure picked up more, but it wore us down," Hodge said.
    ...
"We had some shots that just didn't go in," Hodge said.
