Phillip S. Hodge, 47, of 345 Orchard St., Elgin, was charged with three counts of aggravated battery, one count of obstruction of justice and one count of resisting a police officer, police said.

Hodge was driving by, got out of his car and approached the police with closed fists., police said.

"I just got off work," Hodge said in court Wednesday morning."They had my son in cuffs."

Police said Hodge demanded the keys to the SUV and was told he couldn't have them.

"I just grabbed the car keys.I just got the car for my son and they were going to tow it," Hodge told a judge.

Hodge told them he was going to take the car and they told Hodge he was under arrest, police said.

Hodge escaped from police twice, once by striking an officer on his hand and chest and the other time by pushing him, police said.

Hodge ran off but was caught on the 800 block of Orange Street after police threatened to pepper spray him, police said.

Hodge said in court Wednesday he got out of prison in 2002, turned his life around and has helped counsel street gang members in cooperation with the Elgin Police Department.

He was taken to the Kane County jail where he posted $3,000 Wednesday afternoon and was released.

His next court date is scheduled for Aug. 27 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
