The festival averages about $2,000 for the department, according to fire chief Gaylord Hill, and funds in the past have been used for various training and equipment.

"It's been a good fit for us and the people. It helps have a good relationship with the community and raise money," Hill said of the festival.

Hill said they are doing some renovations to their 50-year-old fire station and need a new air compressor to provide air for their 20 active members when they go into fires.
    ...
Hill also said a renewal levy will be on the fall ballot for the fire department, and they will use the fall festival to help spread the word.

"The community has always been supportive of us and that is what keeps us going. We're over a hundred years old, the department started in 1895, so we must be doing something right," Hill said.

A woodburner or older stove heater is believed to be the cause, according to Gaylord Hill, chief with the West Lafayette Fire Department.
    ...
Hill said it was tough to put out the fire because of the home's location on top of a steep bank.
    ...
"The temperature was terrible," Hill added.
    ...
"Luckily nobody was hurt or got frostbite," Hill said. "We all took care of each other. The big thing is that nobody was hurt."

It took a few hours and plenty of manpower to extinguish the blaze, but the fire wasn't over. Hill said the West Lafayette department received another call at 7:11 a.m. that the fire had rekindled.

According to West Lafayette Fire Chief Gaylord Hill, the leak occurred at Linton Township Road 123 next to County Road 123.

The leak, although relatively minor and contained immediately, reminded Hill and others of a much more serious gas leak from 1968 which led to a fatal explosion.

"I think the location excited people more than anything," he said.

The other three townships are Oxford, White Eyes and Lafayette.

"If that (levy) were to fail, it's likely everyone else would have to cut somewhere," Hill said.
