Representative J. Calvin Hill, Jr. Dist.21Cherokee County, Georgia
In 1986, Calvin and Cheryl started a little business in their home in Marietta. As it grew, they eventually moved it to a warehouse in Holly Springs and they relocated to the City of Ball Ground in 1988 and immediately became involved in their new community.Although immersed in restoring their turn-of ,the-century home, Cheryl soon became President of the Anetsa-ga-da Garden Club and Calvin attended city council meetings and became a poll worker during several elections. In just a few years, the seated Mayor decided not to run again, so Calvin threw his hat in the ring , and amazingly won!
Following in the footsteps of his predecessor, Calvin continued cleaning up the picturesque town and worked on developing the baseball fields and a new city park Regionally he was elected by his peers as vice-chairman of the Cherokee Municipal Association, was chosen for the Atlanta Regional Commission's Leadership Institute and Foundation and made a lifetime member of the Georgia Municipal Association. It was some time after being elected to his second term that Calvin and Cheryl made the decision to move to Hickory Flat so that their teen-age daughter would be close to school and they would just be a few minutes from their growing company in Holly Springs.
Out of public service, Calvin devoted much of his spare time to working with numerous civic groups and other non-profits.From Chairman of the Cherokee Outdoor YMCA, United Way, A Day for Reinhardt and vice-chair of the Cherokee Chamber to President of the Rotary Club of Canton and serving on numerous boards such as the Anna Crawford Child Crisis Center, the Development Authority of Cherokee County and Chair of the finance committee of the Canton First United Methodist Church.
On a national and international scale, Calvin served on the board of the March of Dimes-Northwest, Safe America Foundation, International Window Film Association, Protecting People First Foundation, and is an American Legion Member-for-Life.Rotary International chose him to lead a business delegation to Indonesia and the Friendship Force returned Calvin and Cheryl to the Republic of Georgia as part of a business building delegation. While on a relief mission during the Georgian rebellion, Calvin established further relations with Georgian business and political leaders, including President Shevardnadze and shortly after was appointed as Attaché' and President of the Georgia National Olympic Committee for the 96 Games.
During these years Calvin served on the Board of Directors for Region's Bank while working with Cheryl in managing their companies in Holly Springs. In 1999, he joined with 9 other local businessmen and formed Cherokee Bank in Canton.Shortly afterward, Calvin and Cheryl bought the Maya Beach Hotel in Belize - which they ran until Hurricane Iris made a direct hit with 145 mile and hour winds and a fifteen foot tidal surge. After rebuilding and selling the property, they refocused their energies in restoring their old house in Ball Ground.
In 2002, Calvin was first elected to Represent District 16 in Cherokee County and was re-elected in 2004 in the reformed 21 st District.Recognized by the Leadership of the House, Calvin was named Chairman of the Special Rules Committee and Vice-Chairman of Banks and Banking as well as serving on Appropriations and State Institutions and Property committees. He was appointed to Chair the Special Sub-Committee on Auto Title Pawns and the Study Committee on Tobacco Tax Evasion between the 2005 and 2006 sessions.
