Former pro quarterback Rusty Hilger has vanished, and so has $2.9 million that was supposed to help men and women avoid bankruptcy, court records say.
Hilger took the cash to pay a group of former NFL players and other businesses he was associated with, court records indicate.
>
For less than two years, Hilger was the CEO of Irving-based US Credit Management Inc., which advertised itself as "THE national debt elimination and counseling company," and employed a bank of telemarketers who called debt-troubled consumers across the country promising relief.
But when former Los Angeles Raider Hilger left US Credit in May 2005, company workers noticed the money that was supposed to be paid to creditors was missing, court records indicate. As a result, US Credit has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection and, in doing so, has placed its clients closer to bankruptcy than they were before they signed on, attorneys say.
"Approximately $2.9 million was stolen by Rusty Hilger, PPI Charities, Pro Player, Inc. and Pro Players Network," the bankruptcy filing states, referring to businesses Hilger started that paired former pro athletes in marketing and community education.

Several attempts by the Dallas Business Journal to reach Hilger and other company officers were unsuccessful.Hilger and US Credit are the targets of a class-action lawsuit from three former clients. In addition, Irving police say they are investigating the theft of $200,000 in electronic equipment mentioned in the bankruptcy filing.
More than 170 debt-ridden people from across the country seek money in the bankruptcy, court records show.Attorneys say the only chance they have at getting their money back lies in finding Hilger and others directly involved in managing the company.

Attorneys say other potential clients were charmed by Hilger over the phone.
Hilger, now 44, led Oklahoma State University to an appearance in the Bluebonnet Bowl.He was drafted in the sixth round of the 1985 NFL draft by the then-Los Angeles Raiders.Hilger played sparingly in the next three seasons. He played in 11 games in 1988 for the Detroit Lions. He finished his NFL career in 1991 with 204 completions in 464 attempts, 2,584 yards passing, 11 touchdown passes and 19 interceptions.
Despite the lackluster pro career, Hilger stayed close to other Texas and Oklahoma football standouts.
