  CHESTER - Sixteen-year-old Harvey Hayes missed breakfast Monday morning.
  
  I slept too late, admitted Hayes, a junior at Chester High School, while he was waiting for the bus to go home from his first day back at school.it be too early.we be supposed to have at least two more weeks of summer.I have not even gotten all my school supplies yet..
  
  Hayes and about 6, 800 Chester County kids - as well as Lancaster County students - returned to classes earlier than usual this year.School officials hope to improve test scores by avoiding a schedule that had students cramming for statewide tests after the holidays.

  Chester High Assistant Principal Rusty Pemberton said it was the most efficient first day back he be seen in 16 years.
  
  Overall, pretty smooth.There were a few glitches, but that is to be expected, Pemberton said.
  
  Lancaster County kids also packed their book bags and headed back to class Monday.

  This is believed to be a picture of Chester High from 1907.The school was then located in downtown Chester where Red Dot Construction used to be located on Market Street.
  
  The first public schoolhouse in Chester was erected in 1858.It was known as the "Pride of Southern Illinois" and is spoken of as "an ornament to the place and a lasting monument to the intelligent spirit of the citizens of Chester."
