Tony Higgins, NBA Crossover catalytic intern, said his responsibilities include "helping churches assimilate individuals reached through Crossover."He also anticipates identifying prospect groups who could better be reached through a new church start.
"We are looking for churches to work cooperatively to share the responsibility and the blessing of starting a new church," Higgins said.
He and Terry urged churches interested in learning more about helping a new church get started to contact Terry at wterry@tnbaptist.org or to call him at (615) 355-7905.
"Even the smallest church can be involved" in planting a church, Higgins said.He cited needs such as prayer and sending one family for a short time to help get the church started.
Higgins has a personal interest in one church expected to be started after Crossover and to use the facilities of an existing church, Eastland Baptist Church, in east Nashville. In addition to his NBA responsibilities, Higgins will be the pastor of the new congregation, tentatively called Eastland Community Church.
The initial target group will be "lost and unchurched individuals who have been moving into east Nashville in the last five years and are in the 35-55 age range.Prospects discovered through Crossover will receive follow-up and a core group will be developed during the summer with a public opening anticipated for September, Higgins said.He also anticipates starting ministries through this church to reach younger single adults and newly married adults.
"We are using Crossover as the catalytic event to reach into the community to develop a core group," Higgins said.
Higgins affirmed Eastland Baptist Church for its strong support of the new church. He noted that conversations are in process with a large church in the greater Nashville area to become a sponsor by providing 8-10 families with a one-year commitment to bring "their time, tithes, and talents."
"We have a great heritage of starting new work all over the world," he noted.
