   The agreement was signed by Works Minister Gabriel Kapris, Defence Minister Mathew Gubag, and Mabey & Johnson project manager Tom Higgins in Port Moresby.

   Mr Higgins said ten bridges would be built in the Southern Highlands, two in Enga and one in the Western province. He said under the agreement, the Papua New Guinea Defence Force would supply manpower where soldiers from the engineering battalion in Lae would be trained by M&J to build the bridges. The Works Department will supply materials and equipment. Mr Higgins said training for the engineering battalion would start next week and will take 10 days and bridge construction will begin next month. The project will be funded by the Government at a cost of K26 million. However, Mr Higgins said they had only received K1.5 million.

   Mr Wenge said Mr Tom Higgins, the country director for Mabey and Johnson, the British firm supplying the bridges under the Yumi Yet Bridge Programme, has explained to him that the government has yet to approve the second phase of the programme, which was the cause of the delay in building a much needed bridge for the people of Komba in Kabwum.
