UTEP's offense has been explosive the last four years with Patrick Higgins as coordinator.

During that span the Miners have scored 30+ points 17 times and 40 or more on nine occasions.UTEP has averaged 24.2 points and 364.7 yards of offense in 47 games with Higgins at the helm of the offense.

Higgins previously was the Miners' wide receivers coach in 1998 and 1999.

Four Miner offensive stars have signed NFL contracts over the last three years -- tight end Brian Natkin (Tennessee) and center Carey Clayton (San Diego) in 2001, and wide receiver Lee Mays (Pittsburgh) and tight end Joey Knapp (Houston) in 2002.Knapp and Natkin are now with Green Bay and St. Louis, respectively, while Mays is still with the Steelers.

Higgins' 2002 offensive unit ranked fourth in the WAC and 54th nationally in rushing (154.1 ypg).

A native of Pendleton, N.Y., Higgins came to UTEP from Columbia University in New York City, where he had worked as running backs coach in 1997.

From 1994-96, Higgins was the offensive coordinator and special teams coach at Shepherd College, an NCAA Division II institution in Shepherdstown, W.V.He was also responsible for coaching the Rams' quarterbacks and receivers.In 1994 and 1996 the Rams finished among the top 16 teams in the country in total offense.

Higgins has also seen duty as a head coach at St. Andrews Prep in Savannah, Ga., where he spent the 1993 season.Higgins also coached collegiately at William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa (head coach 1992), Quincy University in Quincy, Ill. (defensive coordinator 1991, offensive coordinator 1990) and St. Cloud State in St. Cloud, Minn. (wide receivers 1988).

Higgins earned his bachelor's degree in chemistry, with a minor in biology, from William Penn College in 1986.He received his master's degree in exercise physiology from St. Cloud State in 1989.Higgins was honored twice as a football Academic All-America and was a member of the Alpha Chi National Honor Society.

Higgins was born on Nov. 14, 1963.He married the former Karen Laroche in July, 2003.

Tech tight ends/special teams coach Patrick Higgins is a familiar face to the Texas-El Paso Miners.Higgins spent six years as an assistant coach under Gary Nord at UTEP.

UTEP-LT ties: Besides former UTEP offensive coordinator Patrick Higgins, there are other UTEP-Louisiana Tech ties.

UTEP offensive coordinator Patrick Higgins said there are two ways you can handle it with a youthful group of pass catchers, featuring three redshirt freshmen, four sophomores, three juniors and no seniors.

"You can get on them about it, and risk making them tighter and dropping more passes," Higgins said, "or you can forget about it and just move on."

Louisiana Tech tight ends/special teams coach Patrick Higgins has accepted an offer to become an assistant coach at Brigham Young.
