Given that this best of seventeen frames contest represented yet another ranking event milestone in the twelve year career of previously little-known Higginson, the Widnes based journeyman appeared remarkably relaxed on his debut in a major professional final which served to provide the culmination of a stunning seven days in which the 500-1 outsider had compiled a maximum 147 during his 5-1 quarter-final drubbing of World No.15 Allister Carter in addition to registering shock victories over the likes of former World champion John Higgins, Irishman Michael Judge, and Glaswegian Stephen Maguire who all fell victim to the qualifier's fairy-tale run to the final.

In complete contrast to his less accomplished opponent who until this week had never gone beyond the last 48 of a professional event, it was of note, that the circumstances for still relatively inexperienced Robertson, were that for the first time in his rather more glittering career, he faced the additional burden of expectation in being an overwhelming favourite to land his second ranking event of the season.

Making light of his new found lofty status, Robertson coolly went about his business at the outset with a polished 76 proving the highlight of frame one, but his initial contribution was soon to be outshone as an apparently nerveless Higginson posted his intent by bagging a run of 114 to level at 1-1.

Quickly restoring his narrow advantage, Robertson routinely compiled 71 in the third, but in a pivotal and keenly contested tactical last frame prior to the mid-session interval, the Australian was beneficiary to more than his fair share of good fortune, as plucky Higginson unluckily knocked in the pink when laying an excellent snooker with two reds remaining, which following a further brief period of safety exchange, led to Robertson edging matters 67-47 on the final colours for a somewhat fortuitous 3-1 lead.

The first upon the resumption developed into a decidedly scrappy affair which despite earnest scoring endeavours in both camps protractedly fell to Robertson 78-46 as he extended his advantage at 4-1.
