   John J. Higgins is currently the Acting General Counsel of Hughes Electronics Corporation. Previously, he served as corporate senior vice president and general counsel for Hughes Electronics Corporation from May 1988 to November 1997, when he retired. He was a member of the Hughes Electronics Office of the Chairman. He had responsibility for all legal and public policy matters involving the company, was the principal legal advisor to the board of directors and supervised a staff of more than 50 legal professionals.
   
   Named a senior vice president of Hughes Electronics in 1989, Higgins came to the company one year earlier as vice president and general counsel, following a lengthy career on the legal staff of General Motors Corporation.
   
   Prior to joining HUGHES, Higgins was assistant general counsel of GM in charge of the legal staff's finance, insurance and creditors rights practice group. He was also general counsel of General Motors Acceptance Corporation and its subsidiaries.
   
   Higgins joined GM's legal staff in New York City in 1959, and was employed there in various legal capacities, including assistant general counsel in charge of the New York office, until 1981, when he moved to Detroit.
   
   Born Feb. 6, 1934 in Yonkers, N.Y., Higgins received his B.A. degree in English, cum laude, from Siena College and his LL.B. from Fordham University Law School. He was admitted to the Bar in New York State in 1958 and was subsequently admitted to practice before the U.S. Courts of Appeal for the Second, Sixth and Federal Circuits, and the U.S. District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York. He was admitted to practice in Michigan in 1982.
   
   In 1990, Higgins was admitted to the California State Bar, and was admitted to practice in the U.S. District Courts for the Southern, Northern and Central Districts of California, and in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. He was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court in 1991. In 1993, the Corporate Law Departments Section of the Los Angeles County Bar Association named Higgins as Outstanding Corporate Counsel.
   
   On October 26, 2000 he is to receive the Richard J. Bennett Award from the Fordham Law School Corporate Counsel Association.
   
   Higgins is a trustee of Siena College, Loudonville, New York and a member of the Fordham Law School National Alumni Council.
   
   Higgins and his wife, Susan, reside in Malibu, Calif.. They have a daughter and two sons.
