John B. Higgins is one of 250 individuals who participated in a joint-military readiness training exercise in the Rio Grande Valley in South Texas.Operation Lone Star 2001 involved reserve component servicemembers from the Army , Navy , Marine Corps , and Air Force , as well as some civilian volunteers.
During the three-week training operation , the reservists and civilian medical teams provided health care assistance to the unattended , untreated population of the Rio Grande Valley.The Department of Defense sponsored the operation , which offered free preventative medicine , pharmaceutical services , dental maintenance and restorations , immunizations and diagnostic service at three cities in Hidalgo County during the summer.
Higgins is a field radio operator with the 4th Medical Battalion in Orlando.He graduated in 1997 from Haines City High School and received an associate's degree in 2001 from Polk Community College.
