Whatever happened to: Kaylin Higbie?
The 2002 Pocono Mountain High School grad is zeroing in on the final courses in her four-year University of Delaware program leading to a teaching degree. And she's still busy pursuing all the things friends and family remember as her trademark activities - lots of music.
She just spent spring break recharging at home.No Daytona trips. In fact, she spent her break dog-sitting while her parents spent their spring break in Florida.
...
We provide a lot of different services," Higbie said.
She is also working for the Eyman Children's Center in Elkton, Md., as a preschool teacher on a part-time basis.Higbie will be student teaching in the fall and will graduate in December.
After graduation Higbie plans on moving back to the Poconos to be near her family and friends. She will apply for a kindergarten or first grade teaching job in a public school.
"I miss my family, watching my 3-year-old nephew grow up, having home-cooked meals, sleeping in my bed and simply the familiarity and comforts of home," Higbie says.
...
Higbie chooses to focus mostly on singing now that she's in college; she enjoys performing at churches and weddings.
At Pocono Mountain - she graduated right before it split into East and West high schools - Higbie was active in all areas of the music department. She was part of the marching band, wind ensemble, jazz band, concert band, concert choir president her senior year, vocal jazz, Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Honor Choirs, and was chosen to be a member of the American Choral Directors Association, All Eastern Honor Choir.
Although Higbie has a fondness for her hometown, she still enjoys the college life and every opportunity she's been given.
"I have enjoyed having the opportunity to live on my own both on and off campus.I have also enjoyed the multitude of experiences that I have been given during the past four years. Most importantly would be those that I have been exposed to through my involvement in the University of Delaware Chorale.I was fortunate to have the opportunity to travel both around the country as well as overseas including a performance at Carnegie Hall, performances in front of thousands of music educators during the National Convention for the American Chorale Directors Association in Los Angeles, as well as performances during a European tour in Scotland, England, France, Germany and Austria."
Higbie said she's enjoyed the social aspects of college life and interaction with different types of people on a regular basis."These interactions have allowed me to make friends who, over the last few years, have become my extended family," Higbie said.
"I've learned how to become more independent from the confines of my familiar and comfortable childhood home.I have also learned, from different experiences, how to handle and deal with certain extreme situations, and until you face them first hand, you really don't know.College gives us those unique opportunities," Higbie says.
Higbie said her biggest accomplishment has been serving as president of the Student Association for the Education of Young Children."I've taken the group from nothing to something, and I've made them well known on campus."
In between all the classes and endless amounts of homework and club activities, Higbie enjoys shopping, being with friends, working with children, scrapbooking, puzzles, traveling, watching movies and listening to music. Some of her favorite flicks are "Saving Private Ryan," "Rent" and "The Sound of Music."
She enjoys listening to country and Broadway music, and of course the University of Delaware Chorale CD's.
"I really like country music and sound tracks.I don't really have a favorite band.I just put on the radio and sing to everything."
