Dr. William J. Hierstein resigned as president last October after a six-month battle with some trustees, which led to the board's suspending him in August and appointing Ullom as acting president.

The Hawkeye Professional Educator's Association, which represents faculty members, called for the reinstatement of Hierstein.The United Electrical Workers Local 855, which represents maintenance and custodial workers and support staff at the college, said the trustees did not follow board policy in suspending Hierstein. For years, faculty members had complained of the lack of communication at board meetings.

When the board finally decided in August to fire Hierstein in public, it refused to allow Hierstein's attorney to respond to allegations against the president.Six trustees said they would not permit the attorney or the public to speak at the meeting. Hierstein scheduled an appeal before an administrative law judge, but a few days before an October hearing, he resigned. In December, when a Hawkeye accounting teacher asked to see the legal bills for the Hierstein affair, the board voted to release only quarterly summaries of legal bills without the itemized names of any cases. The board's apparent propensity for secrecy was challenged by Trustee Micalea Lorenz, who ran on a platform of doing the public's business in public when she defeated Culpepper last September. The day after the board and Hierstein agreed on a confidentiality agreement, she said: "I'm disappointed in another silent agreement.

The board's past involvement in the past may have caused some of the problems with Barry, Brobst and Hierstein, several Hawkeye people have opined.
