HICKS IN CHARGE:@ Karl Hicks had his cell phone in one hand and a landline phone in the other when referee Jamie Luckie came up to him during the first timeout of the second half of Thursday's ACC tournament opener.
...
After the brief chat, Hicks, the ACC's associate commissioner in charge of the tournament, bolted to the arena's practice floor to deal with an issue there.
And this was only the first of eight games over two days.
"They way I view it is to make it through the first two days," Hicks said."Thursday and Friday are the biggest challenges. You're putting out the little fires that you're not going to have later on."
At least Hicks knows where he's going. Before replacing longtime ACC executive Fred Barakat last year, Hicks served as assistant general manager of the Charlotte Bobcats and helped design several parts of Bobcats Arena.
"If the tournament is anywhere other than Greensboro, I'd want it to be here," Hicks said.
