    Add basketball: Julius Hicks, a former Oregon player, was hired as an assistant coach at Pepperdine one year after The Oregonian chronicled his efforts at the 2006 NCAA Final Four to land a Division I job.

    Hicks spent the past year as director of men's basketball operations at Stanford.He played at Oregon from 1999 to 2001.

    You may remember Julius Hicks as a reserve forward on the 1999-2000 NCAA Tournament team, and a starter on the 2000-2001 team.He was a JUCO transfer from West Valley College in Saratoga, California.He was more of a defensive player than anything else, and his 32 blocks that season is seventh on the UO single season list.He had five blocks in a single game against WSU that year, which is the second highest single game total in UO history.He graduated from Oregon with a B.S. in Sociology in 2001.

    According to his bio on the Stanford basketball site, he played two years professionally overseas in Switzerland, South Korea, and Austria from 2001-2003, before returning to the US to become an assistant coach for his JUCO team at West Valley College.In 2006, he was hired on as Director of Men's Basketball Operations at Stanford.

    Julius Hicks was a qualifier out of high school, but took the junior college route.The 6'9, 235-pound big forward has both height and size to clean up the boards with precision.He reportedly runs the floor well and is rated a good athlete.He is known to be good defensively on the junior college level, which holds promise for his Division I future.He isn't a great offensive threat, but pulls down 10 plus rebounds per game and can score when needed (shoots close to 72% from the floor).

    West Valley finished 24-8 in the 98-99 season, falling to #12 Delta 64-61 in the second round of the 1999 California Community College Championships.Hicks was again named to the All-Conference team.

    West Valley went 30-4 last season after losing in the quarterfinals of the state tournament, 99-67, to eventual champion Compton.West Valley was a defensively minded team, holding their opponents to the mid 60s in scoring, while forcing 22.9 turnovers per game.Hicks was named an All-Coast Conference athlete as West Valley shared the conference championship.

    3-8-99...ESPN's version of the National Equirer called "The Word" has Julius Hicks narrowed to two programs...Providence and Virginia.However, Insider's Report has Hicks saying he is still wide open with no current favorite.His narrowed list includes Virginia, Washington, Purdue, Xavier of Ohio, Santa Clara, and Penn State.He has reportedly been offered by Virginia and Xavier.Virginia head coach Pete Gillen will be in Saratoga for a home visit with Hicks on March 17th.

    IR also reports that Julius Hicks , who is rated one of the top big men in the junior college ranks , is still considering the Nittany Lions.Hicks , who was academically qualified out of high school , is a student at West Valley junior college in Saratoga , California.He told IR that he will visit Virginia March 17 , and that he is still considering Providence ( which he visited in the fall ) , Santa Clara , Washington , Purdue , Xavier and PENN STATE.
