    APRIL'S SPOTLIGHT IS ON: ROY HENSLEY

    This Months Spotlight will be on our President, Roy Hensley.Although he is hearing, we will include him in this months Spotlight becasue we have not finished interviewing next months candidate.You will see his picture at the top right of this website as it scrolls.

    Roy first learned asl at the age of 26 after his oldest sister Teresa married a deaf man, Dan Kuehn, from Michigan.

    After completing ASL I and II at Mira Costa College in Oceanside and ASL III and IV at Mesa College in San Diego, Roy moved with his family to Jax, Fla to enter a 2 year program working hands-on with the deaf community there.

    With his experience and success in banking, Roy was able to use his skills to improve the quality of life for the deaf community in San Diego.As a result of his strong background Signs Of Silence was recognized as the top non profit agency in the World in 2002, amongst many other awards.His ability to reach the hearts of our deaf community and break down barriers to accessibility has changed the face of our deaf community in SD.His ability to choose the right people for his board of directors also guaranteed SOS would be the best !!!

    Now let's get more personal.....this will give a good insight to who Roy really is....his favorite color is yellow, his favorite number is 3 and his favorite cartoon character is Scrappy Doo.His favorite super hero is Spider Man. Roy's favorite state is Texas (his birth state) and as you can guess his favorite sports teams are Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, Texas Rangers, Dallas Stars, Texas Longhorns.

    If Roy had any place in the world he would like to go for vacation it would be Italy and Greece.His favorite car is a Corvette.Lastly the only other thing I can think of is his favorite food and that would be Pizza and McDonalds French Fries.Oh and his favorite candy is Reeses Peanut butter cups.

    Roy Hensley

    Born in 1961 in the great state of Texas, Roy Hensley was born into a Navy family.His father, Clyde, servedin the Navy for almost 30 years.Mom was mostly a stay at home mother raising 7 children, 5 boys and 2 girls.Roy is 2nd to youngest and has a twin brother named Ken.

    Roy made his home in San Diego from 1966 at the age of 5 when his dad retired from the military.Outside of two years in Florida, California has been his home most of his life.

    Roy's background growing up was mostly in private schools.He has been involved in sports and most of hissiblings were involved in sports during school.His old brother and his younger brother were both in the Air Force.Roy is not limited in his sports interests.....football, basketball, tennis and golf among other things.

    Roy graduated HS in 1979 from a private school in Escondido.Soon after he started his carreer in banking at age20, over a period of 10 years, and was quite successful.He went from driver to teller to Branch Manager, the lastbank he worked for was Nations Bank now called Bank Of America.

    Roy was 26 years old and taking ASL classes at Mira Costa and MesaCollege in 1988.He then went to a non-accedited program in Jacksonville, Florida for 2 years in 1990 to workhands-on with the deaf community.

    Upon returning to San Diego in 1992 Roy began his "journey" into the deaf world and his current occupation withSigns of Silence and as a free lance interpreter.What started out as a simple interest in deaf statistics ended up intoa full fleged lifestyle that has put San Marcos and San Diego on the map for the deaf.No other agency for the deafhas ever had so much recognition in San Diego in such a short period of time.

    Certified in 1998 as a sign interpreter, Roy quickly rose to the top of his profession being contracted by the state ofCalifornia and the president of the US.Roy continues what he stared in 1996 with SOS and shows no sign of slowingdown either.The uniqueness and blend of personalities through SOS is waht draws so many people to his agency.
