ÊÊÊÊWeather conditions might also have something to do with the surge in colds, said Dr. Nick Hemady, associate director of the family medicine residency program at North Oakland Medical Centers in Pontiac.
ÊÊÊÊ"We feel because of the change in the temperature that we've had, the rain that we've had is causing one of the viruses to get activated," he said, just minutes after seeing a patient with cold symptoms.
ÊÊÊÊ"There are probably about 100 viruses that cause the common cold," he said.
...
ÊÊÊÊAnd, said Hemady, the virus doesn't present as the fl u.
ÊÊÊÊ"When you have the fl u, the symptoms are pretty much the same, but they're much more severe and the onset is more abrupt," he said.
ÊÊÊÊMalafa said she expects the current spate of colds to run its course in the next two to three weeks.
ÊÊÊÊIn the meantime, the best thing people can do to avoid getting a cold is to avoid getting the virus.
ÊÊÊÊ"Wash your hands, cover your face when you cough or sneeze and throw the tissue in the wastebasket," she said.
...
ÊÊÊÊ"Get some rest," said Hemady.
