I was very disappointed with the Aug. 11 sports story, "U.S. puts Chinese in their place," by Marc Heisler of the Los Angeles Times.
The headline tells readers that the Chinese were so inflated that the U.S. basketball team had to put them in a proper place. But, before the U.S.-China game, the vast majority of people, including the Chinese, expected the U.S. to win by a large margin. It takes a great leap of thought to jump to the perception of the inflated Chinese and Chinese-deflating American. But the writer failed to notice the enthusiastic cheers the Chinese audience gave to both teams, and the respect each team has for each other.
Mr. Heisler also showed his satirical ability.
...
If Mr. Heisler would like to express his feelings toward China, he should write a column labeled "opinion," not embed such opinions in a news story.
Another news story about the U.S.-China game ended with: "China lost, but basketball won."I hope Mr. Heisler will follow such a spirit when he covers the Olympics in the future.
