Heisey would take scientific approach
...
Dr. Gregory Heisey believes he can help the Birmingham school board tackle financial issues through a scientific way of looking at problems.
"I try to take out the emotional issues and looks at the facts. The analytical way of looking at the budget to me is very important," said Heisey, a research veterinarian for the Henry Ford Health System in Detroit.

Heisey, 58, of Franklin, is running for one of two school board seats in the Nov. 6 election. He says he's running because he has a vested interest in the district as the father of Derrick, 16, a Groves High School student.Derrick is currently in Karlsruhe, Germany, for his junior year of study.
Heisey and his wife, Marie, an English teacher in Harper Woods, also have two daughters who graduated before they moved to the district in 2004.
Heisey has a strong belief in the long-term benefits of exchange programs. The couple has hosted three high school exchange students, including currently one from China.
He says he would not support cutting foreign language classes.
"I firmly believe that the school district should require a foreign language for graduation," he said.
Heisey said he runs departments with budgets of up to $10 million a year.He is responsible for "planning, prioritizing and implementing" them.
He would look for prioritizing in the new superintendant, he said: "He's got to learn how to do more with less and with that prioritizing, what will be first, second and third.I think anything that lets us maintain academic excellence is going to get top priority."
Ultimately, Heisey said, the state is the key to solving the school's budget problem, and he supports "putting pressure on the Legislature to change."
"I think the board as a whole should take a pro-active stand," he said.
Heisey added of the school board, "It should not be a rubber stamp for the administration."
Heisey earned his veterinary degree from Ohio State University and a master's of science in laboratory animal medicine from Penn State University. He served in the military for 20 years, during which time he lived in Malaysia and Thailand. He also worked at the University of California.
Heisey has been an active high school parent volunteer and also volunteers in the community.
