Late in the afternoon, the 61-year-old scientist took time away from the festivities to talk about, among other things, his decision to defect from his then Communist-controlled homeland in the early 1980s.
The son of an electrical engineer and Polish independence fighter who died in Buchenwald concentration camp during World War II, Chomczynski earned a master's degree in biochemistry from the Polish Academy of Science in Warsaw.He first visited the United States in 1973 as a postdoctoral fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Maryland.From 1981 to 1982, he returned to NIH as a visiting scientist.
