Dana Kelly Heiny

According to family reports, Dana developed her lungs for singing while still in the nursery in the hospital where she was born.Raised on a farm near Haxtun, Colorado, Dana's love of singing solos was nurtured and encouraged by the good people of Haxtun from the time she was about four years old.In addition, many talented teachers and supporters helped her learn to play the piano, coronet, French horn, chord guitar, string bass, and electric bass guitar.Dana's parents provided support by being chauffeurs, paying for piano lessons, procuring instruments, and attending performances.Dana was honored to sing solos at many community, school, and church events, and participated in band, chorus, and the Haxtun United Methodist Church choir.In high school, she was selected to sing solos at a regional choral concert and a statewide talent showcase, and continued to develop music skills at regional and state honor bands and choruses.While pursuing a Botany degree at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Dana played French horn with the Symphonic Band and the Chamber Orchestra, and sang with the University Singers chorus.She had a small Creative and Performing Arts Grant Award for Voice from the Music Department.One spring she sang with a youth choir from the Fort Collins Presbyterian Church when they toured New Mexico.As a graduate student in Plant Pathology, Dana landed a small role in a summer play that included a pre-show solo.She had a small part in the Fort Collins community theater production of MY FAIR LADY.After she finished graduate school studying science, Dana had more time for community theater participation.She was in several musicals and plays produced at the Arts Center of the Ozarks in Springdale, Arkansas.Dana is proudest of her roles as Agnes Gooch, the nanny, in MAME, Elizabeth in THE CRUCIBLE, and Sarah Brown, the missionary, in GUYS AND DOLLS.

Dana also played one of the Three Little Maids in THE MIKADO put on by the University of Arkansas Opera Theater in Fayetteville.Dana sang the roles of Musetta, Mimi, and Susanna in Opera Scene Concerts.Dana was privileged to have two years of private voice lessons with Elaine Cencel in the Music Department at the University of Arkansas.

Dana sang with the Fayetteville Community Chorus when they performed PORGY AND BESS music.One of the concerts was in Bentonville, Arkansas, home of the headquarters of Wal-Mart.While leaving the concert hall, Dana accidentally bumped into Sam Walton.

Because of this brush with fame and wealth, Dana didn't wash that elbow for a week.It was an accident, really!For two years, Dana sang the high tenor part in the Sweet Adelines Women's Barbershop Chorus in Rogers, Arkansas.She also sang with the ACO Chorale in Springdale, AR, when Gail Hocott was the director.Dana was the soloist for the First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Springdale, Arkansas, for many months, and continued to sing for them as a substitute until she moved with her family back to Colorado.Dana enjoyed two years of singing with the big choir at the First Congregational Church in Greeley, Colorado.Dana is married and is the busy mother of triplets.Her parents continue to help as much as they can, particularly when problems arise due to the extra needs of one of the triplets, who is disabled. Dana has a Bachelor of Science degree in Botany and a Master of Science degree in Plant Pathology from Colorado State University, and a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from the University of California at Davis.For many years, Dana worked as a post-doctoral research scientist and a part-time instructor at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, teaching courses in Botany, Microbiology, Plant Physiology, and History of Science.Information about the songs in the BLESSED album can be found in the notes in the CD folder insert.Additional information is posted in the artist comments at www.cdbaby.com/cd/danakellyheiny.
