Kurt P. Heinking, D.O., an osteopathic physician (D.O.) practicing in Willowbrook, Ill., explained how osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) can help during pregnancy during a presentation he gave at the American Osteopathic Association Convention and Scientific Seminar in San Diego.OMT is a treatment practiced by many D.O.s that involves using the hands to diagnose, treat, and prevent illness and injury.Dr. Heinking, a family medicine and osteopathic manipulative treatment specialist, is a professor of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine at the Midwestern University/Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine in Downers Grove, Ill.
According to Dr. Heinking, using OMT can help relieve stress in areas such as the upper torso and lower back that are especially sore from stress put on the body during pregnancy. In addition, applying OMT to the cranium has been known to relieve tension headaches and stress, which can help the mother relax.OMT is also used to reduce other pregnancy-related ailments such as constipation and frequent urination by improving function of the intestines and relieving pressure on the bladder.
Dr. Heinking went on to explain he found performing OMT on his pregnant patients once a month has resulted in easier deliveries with less medication and complications and that post-partum patients benefit from OMT as their bodies recover from the pregnancy and delivery.
Dr. Heinking is a strong supporter of positive reinforcement.
"I always tell my patients how good they are doing and that the discomfort and other symptoms will go away after the pregnancy and it will be worth it," he said.
