"I've probably never had that kind of dominating performance in one stretch out of a hitter," said Milwaukee Lutheran coach Bob Heinkel, in his 23rd season."He's always been a good hitter. But he just put it all together."
...
"I knew that our offense was coming around," Heinkel said."I just didn't know it would be that explosive."
Milwaukee Lutheran started the season rather slowly, however.
The team lost four of its first six games, and the first three losses were by one run each.
...
"I never worried about our capabilities," Heinkel said.
Milwaukee Lutheran won seven of its next eight games. But the team finished the regular season by losing two of three, including a 5-0 loss to Wisconsin Lutheran the day before the playoffs began.
"We had some of our team leaders spend the day at my mom's funeral," Heinkel said."When we came back, we were just not very sharp at all.It was an anomaly. It was a little bit of a wake-up call, but it didn't shock us because we weren't our normal selves."
Milwaukee Lutheran bounced back with easy victories over Heritage Christian (17-1), Kenosha St. Joseph (13-1) and Union Grove (8-2) in the regionals.
...
"Generally you have a slightly easier route, but we weren't thinking that when we saw Beloit Turner and Whitewater were in our path to get to state," Heinkel said, referring to Division 2 play."We were figuring we had a difficult road."
However, state runner-up Whitewater eliminated reigning state champion Turner in a regional final.Milwaukee Lutheran showed its gratitude by beating the Whippets, 5-2, in a sectional semifinal. The Red Knights earned their state berth with a 14-2 victory over Laconia.
...
"We broke their hearts with a couple long balls," Heinkel said."Our hitters made a big dent in the score and in their hearts."
