Bernestine Singley, who selected and edited "When Race Becomes Real," says she asked the writers to be straightforward in their essays on race.

A Dallas resident, Singley graduated from Lawrence University in 1971, one of only 11 Blacks on campus in Appleton, Wis., a town of about 40,000.Her enrollment in this private college was part of a concerted effort to introduce diversity to this otherwise rural area in the center of the dairy state.
