Though the impulses towards Renaissance humanism and Reformation Evangelicalism would later clash and go in separate directions - as in Luther's debate with Erasmus in The Bondage of the Will - the two at first went hand in hand.Wittenberg was very much a Renaissance university, though it retained many of its medieval roots, and was a center for the new learning.And the classical educator par excellence was Luther's friend and collaborator Philip Melanchthon.

One of the charter members of ACCS was a Lutheran pastor named William Heine, whose school in Colorado adopted a classical curriculum.In 1992, Pastor Robert Schaibley of Zion Lutheran Church in Fort Wayne, Indiana, turned his inner city school into an academy with uniforms and required violin.When Pastor Joel Brondos became headmaster of the school in 1996, the conversion to a classical curriculum continued, with the addition of Latin and a literature-based curriculum.

Wyoming has become a center for classical Lutheran education, with William Heine, one of the original pioneers, becoming Education Executive for the district.Mt.Hope Lutheran School in Casper has gone classical, as have, to various degrees, the two other established schools in the district.As many as ten other churches in Wyoming are contemplating starting classical day schools.Another classical Lutheran school was started in Denver, and a number of schools throughout the country are in various stages of implementing a classical curriculum.

Other curricular options being developed in Lutheran schools have a close affinity to classical education.The growing popularity in Lutheran circles of the Core Knowledge Curriculum developed by E. D. Hirsch - which has been adopted by the entire California-Hawaii district of the LCMS - can be seen as part of the classical movement in Lutheran schools.

William C. Heine - is a pastor at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sheridan, Wyoming.He graduated from Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska in 1978.In 1986, he graduated from Concordia Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri.

Bill has taught in elementary and junior high schools in Illinois and Michigan from ‘78-‘82 and served as a pastor in South Dakota and Colorado from ‘86-‘94.He was a co-founder of Lutheran Classical School at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Pagosa Springs, Colorado in 1992.In addition, he served as headmaster for St. Matthew's Lutheran School (K-9) in Stony Plain, Alberta from ‘94-‘97.

Bill came to Wyoming in 1997 and has served as the Wyoming District Education Chairman since 1998.In Sheridan, he was a co-founder of Martin Luther Grammar School where he continues to serve as headmaster.

Bill is a Chaplain in the Civil Air Patrol, Precinct Chairman for the Sheridan County Republican Party and secretary and permanent Board member for the Consortium for Classical and Lutheran Education (www.CCLE.org).

Survivors include four sisters, Prudence Grunkemeyer and Marilyn Toland, both of Sheridan, Frances Brewster of Burlington, Iowa, and Nancy Haynos of St. Marys, Kan.; three brothers, Dean of Circle, Mont., Kenneth of Ojai, Calif., and Bill of Las Vegas; and numerous nieces and nephews.

SHERIDAN -- Funeral services for Sheridan resident Helen Zingham, 86, will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 30, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sheridan by Pastor William Heine.

In August of 1905 Pastor William Heine accepted a call to another charge.He was succeeded by the Reverend William Georgi, who served the congregation for 19 years.

Until this time all the pastors, in addition to their ministerial duties, had also taught school.Pastor Georgi likewise shouldered the teaching burden until 1918, when Zion united with Christ Church of Woodburn into one parish.As this increased the duties of the pastor accordingly, the congregation deemed it necessary to engage a full time teacher.

Jane is survived by her husband Chester of Sheridan; daughter Irene Badgett of Sheridan; sons Chester Jr. and Don both of Gillette, WY; brothers Bill and Don Dunn of Harrison, NE and Pat and Lloyd Dunn of Mitchell, NE; and 9 grandchildren.
