Steven Heine is a professor of Religious Studies and History and director of the Institute for Asian Studies at Flordia International University (FIU).Heine earned his B.A. at the University of Pennsylvania and M.A. and Ph.D. at Temple University.Before coming to FIU, he taught at Pennsylvania State University and directed the East Asian Studies center there.
On April 29 of 2007, Heine was conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette.This award is in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the advancement of the study of Japanese culture and the promotion of understanding of Japan.Consul-General Hiroshi Yamaguchi, Consulate General of Japan in Miami, officially presented the award on behalf of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan in a ceremony on September 7th.Along with the Medal of the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Rosette, the award consists of a certificate bearing the stamp of His Majesty the Emperor of Japan.For photos from the ceremony, click here.To view an interview (2007) with Dr. Heine featured in FIU's "Best in Class" series click here.
In spring 2006, Heine was named Kauffman Professor in the FIU's Eugenio Pino and Family Global Entrepreneurship Center housed in the College of Business Administration.

Heine was a Fulbright Senior Researcher in Japan and twice won National Endowment for Humanities Fellowships.He has conducted research primarily at Tokyo University and Komazawa University in Tokyo.Heine has lectured at these institutions in addition to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Pennsylvania, Stanford, UCLA, Hawaii, London, and many other schools.He was chair of the national Japanese Religions Group (1994-2000) of the American Academy of Religion, and is currently editor of Japan Studies Review as well as book review editor for Japan for Philosophy East and West published by the University of Hawaii.
Heine's research specialty is medieval Japanese religion and society as well as the transition of Zen Buddhism from China to Japan.He has published nearly twenty books and a hundred articles.His recent book, White Collar Zen: Using Zen Principles to Overcome Obstacles and Achieve Your Career Goals published by Oxford University Press has been reviewed by the Harvard Business School, the Washington Post, and USA Today, and it has been featured in an interview on Eye on Books (visit www.eyeonbooks.com for bookcast) and a lecture at the Smithsonian Institution.
Heine has another new book dealing with the founder of the Soto Zen sect in Japan, Did Dogen Go to China?What He Wrote and When He Wrote It (Oxford University Press).

Heine has also published in the Harvard Journal of Asiatic Studies, Journal of Asian Studies Philosophy East and West, Japanese Journal of Religious Studies, Journal of Chinese Philosophy, Post-Script, Journal of the American Academy of Religion, The Eastern Buddhist, Journal of the International Association of Buddhist Studies, Tao, Journal of Global Business Language, and more.He has published translations of the writings of the eminent modern Japanese Buddhist scholar/thinker Masao Abe, and has also translated numerous medieval Zen writings.
In addition, Heine has won several program-building grants from the Department of Education Title VI office and the Japan Foundation for the development of the Asian Studies.Program at FIU He has collaborated with the FIU Latin American and Caribbean Center for the "Asian Globalization and Latin America Project," and has helped construct a consortium involving FIU and the University of Florida as well as Florida Atlantic University, Miami-Dade Community College, and the Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens.He also directs the "JapaNet" teacher training project funded by The Japan Foundation Center for Global Partnership.When Heine came to FIU in the late 1990s, Asian Studies was a fledgling entity, but it less than ten years it has grown into a full-blown program offering B.A. and M.A. degrees, as well as a variety of graduate and undergraduate certificates, serving well over 200 students.
