Steve began his legal career with Heyl Royster in 1983.A native of Peoria, Steve became a partner at Heyl Royster in 1990.

Steve has tried cases throughout the state of Illinois in the areas of trucking, railroad, automobile, professional liability, products liability, construction, and first party property claims.
He served as the President of the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel (2004-2005).He is the DRI Illinois State Representative and the Illinois State Representative for the Association of Defense Trial Attorneys.He is a member of The National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel and the Illinois Appellate Lawyers Association.He is a past Chair of the Commercial Transportation (Rail and Motor Carrier) Litigation Committee, a member of the Property Insurance Law Committee of the Tort and Insurance Practice Section and the Litigation Section of the American Bar Association.
Steve is a published author in legal journals on various trial practice and evidence subjects and for the Southern Illinois University Law Journal, with works such as: "Insurance Law Survey," "Evidence Law Survey" and "Tort Law Survey."He served as the Editor-in-Chief of the IDC Quarterly, the official journal of the Illinois Association of Defense Trial Counsel.He is the author of many articles on evidence and practice tips for that publication.He has spoken on a wide variety of subjects for local, state and national bar associations including the IDC, ISBA, ABA and the Property Loss and Liability Insurance Research Bureaus.
He is a member of the Peoria County, Illinois State and American Bar Associations, as well as the Bar Association of the Seventh Federal Circuit.He has been designated an Illinois "Super Lawyer" by Chicago Magazine, based upon a survey of his peers, as were 13 of his partners.He has also been named as one of the "Leading Lawyers" in Illinois as a result of a survey conducted by the Law Bulletin Publishing Company, a designation awarded to only the top 5 percent of lawyers in the state.
