Prof. Carola Hein

In the 19th and early 20th centuries, visiting Europeans criticized the way Japan was "modernizing" its cities, but today the country is considered a world leader in architectural design, said Carola Hein of Bryn Mawr College at a recent program on Japanese urbanization of the Wilson Center's Asia Program.

CAROLA HEIN is Assistant Professor at Bryn Mawr College in the Growth and Structure of Cities Program.She was trained in Hamburg (Diplom-Ingenieurin) and Brussels (Architecte) and obtained her doctorate at the Hochschule fur bildende Kunste in Hamburg in 1995 on the topic of "Hauptstadt Europa."From 1995 to 1999 she was a Visiting Researcher at Tokyo Metropolitan University and Kogakuin University, researching the reconstruction of Japanese cities after World War II and the Western influence on Japanese urban planning.She has published and lectured widely on topics of contemporary and historical architectural and urban planning in Europe and Japan, and co-authored the volume Hauptstadt Berlin and co-edited Rebuilding Urban Japan after 1945 (2003).

A German native, Carola has lived in Belgium, France, Japan and the United States for many years and have traveled extensively through Europe, Asia, North Africa and North America.She had been interested in the study of architectural and urban history as much as in urban reality, in citizen movements and transportation systems from around the world.Her courses on architecture and the city are thus the outcome of a fascination with the built environment since childhood and of walking through numerous cities as well as of my training in architectural and urban design, theory and history.
