The Merrill Police Department announced Monday that there was no evidence of wrongdoing by former Humane Society director Carol Hein, who ran the nonprofit organization for 25 years.Hein resigned as director in October.
...
According to Mutter,s report, Hein wrote two checks out to herself in the amount of about $36,000 during her final days of employment.
...
The Humane Society has no formal written employment policy, so it was typical for Hein to write out her own paychecks, Mutter determined.
"Ms. Hein asked the (Humane Society) board to adopt an employee handbook, but the board never did," she wrote."If the board had written policies in effect, (it) would have been made aware of banked hours, vacation pay and sick pay of employees.I see no criminal wrongdoing by Ms. Hein."Hein never received the money because former Humane Society treasurer Ken Pickett stopped payment of the two checks so that the issue could be resolved without dispute.
...
Pickett said Monday that Hein is entitled to the money.
...
Hein said Monday that she was unsure whether she would file a claim."I don,t know exactly what my plan is, I have to talk that over with my husband," Hein said.
As for why she resigned, Hein said her 25-year struggle to keep the shelter financially afloat topped off by criticism from some members of the Humane Society board, simply wore her down.
"I guess I just finally had enough of it after that long of a time," she said.
