For Carl L. Hein Jr., of heating oil and air conditioning service company Hein Bros. Inc., being involved has always been key.
"My father always told me a little work wouldn't hurt," Mr. Hein said.
His father, Charles, and his uncle, August, started the business by selling and delivering ice, wood and coal 85 years ago.
Mr. Hein grew up in the business.
"I started when I was a kid bagging coal," he said.
Mr. Hein then moved up to being a truck driver and kept rising in the ranks and is now the president of the company.
Other than a stint in the service and a year of business school, Mr. Hein has been with the company and involved with various community groups his entire life.
He's participated with the Glen Burnie Improvement Association, the chamber's predecessor, the Anne Arundel Trade Council, the Glen Burnie Rotary Club, and been on the board for County National Bank over the years.

He has also been on the board at Baltimore Washington Medical Center, formerly known as North Arundel Hospital, for 34 years.
Mr. Hein has been a member of the Mid-Atlantic Petroleum Distributors' Association for 40 years.
"It's really wonderful and surprising that my name came up," he said.
