Candy Hein, TAMIU vice president for Institutional Advancement, concurs that philanthropy is on the rise, and says TAMIU has been a direct beneficiary.

"We've seen continuing growth in philanthropy in Laredo over the past 10 years.Perhaps most significantly, there is a developing 'family' approach to philanthropy within businesses.Hank and Elizabeth Sames, for example, following the Ford Motor Company Fund example, have established a family tradition of giving. They provide support for our Sames Scholars Program.Other families and businesses are also initiating philanthropic gifts with the university," Hein said.

Candy Hein, TAMIU vice president for institutional advancement, said the grant challenges receiving four-year post-secondary institutions to match its gift within a fiscal year.

"It's a tremendous opportunity for us and one that we are aggressively pursuing with like-minded donors and partners," Hein said."We have found our donors are quite keen to double their gift and increase its impact for students.

"We'll need to have the match in place by Dec. 31, 2007.To date, we've already secured $25,000 through a donation by Conoco-Phillips, leaving us with $75,000 to go."

Hein said the grant funds student scholarships at the University.

"Nearly 80 percent of our student body receives financial assistance, so an opportunity like this is much appreciated. We have also benefited from previous grants from the Greater Texas Foundation and are honored and delighted to be partnering with them again," she said.
