Ann Hein, Midcoast's marketing director, said the dated terminal with its large porthole windows didn't lend itself to attracting new customers.Often, clients were brought to Midcoast's headquarters through its hangar.
About 90 percent of the company's $118 million in annual revenue comes from rehabbing, repairing and outfitting up to nine-seat aircraft. Some of the planes have luxurious wood veneers, leather seats and custom-weave carpets.Customers even have seats designed to exactly fit their posteriors.
"Everything we do is custom-made," Hein said."There are no two planes that are alike. They are like snowflakes."
Midcoast has 800 employees; 500 are in Cahokia and the rest are at Lambert Field, Spirit of St. Louis Airport in Chesterfield and in Perryville, Mo.
As the 20-year-old company grows from the terminal renovation, Hein said the airport itself should benefit.
"This airport has the greatest proximity to downtown St. Louis of any of the area airports, but I don't think people know that," Hein said.
