Terry Campbell, public education officer for Glenwood Fire Department; Amy Hein, Dyer resident and first-grade teacher at Hickory Hills in Glenwood; and Mike Parks, Lakes of the Four Season's Volunteer Fire Force chief, are all involved in Risk Watch, the first comprehensive injury prevention program available for use in schools, according to the National Fire Protection Association, which developed the program.

"Motor vehicle crashes is the No.1 killer of kids ages 5 to 15," said Hein, whose husband is a Dyer police officer."My husband is kind of just like me, a caring person, and it is frustrating to him to hear and see kids hurt in accidents," Hein said. One of his biggest frustration is when people do not use booster seats, infant seats -- parents who do not have their kids restrained.
The Village of Glenwood was one of the first communities in Illinois selected to pilot the program, and Campbell has been instrumental in getting the word out and beyond the south suburbs of Chicago.
"One of the firefighters on the Lakes of the Four Season department, Bob Greaney, is president of operations for Landauer Corp. in Glenwood," said Campbell."He was in the processing of writing a grant for the department for a safety trailer, and I suggested that he go for a trailer and Risk Watch program."
When the grant was approved, Hein and Campbell headed Risk Watch training workshops at Lakes of Four Seasons Task Force for firefighters as well as Jerry Ross School in Winfield to spread the word on the benefits of adding Risk Watch to the school's curriculum."Having Amy is powerful because she is speaking as peer to peer, teacher to teacher," said Campbell.

And if you're interested to hear if this program works, just ask Geronimo "Gerry" Melendez, a former student of Hein's.
...
While learning about Risk Watch in his first grade class, Gerry received a booster seat for himself and requested a child seat for his 13-month-old sister, Ruby, all supplied by Hein.
During summer vacation, Gerry and his family were involved in a motor vehicle crash.

"I was the first elementary school teacher in the state to get certified," said Hein.

"Parents don't realize that seatbelts are made for adult men," explained Hein.
