CROWN POINT -- Amy Hein and Jeffrey Cook were honored Friday night as Lake County's highest 4-H achievers.

Hein, 19, of Crown Point and Cook, 17, of Griffith, were crowned 4-H Achievement Queen and King in a formal ceremony that topped the annual achievement program in the Livestock Show Pavilion.

Hein was crowned by 1999 4-H Achievement Queen Rebecca Colvin, of Merrillville.The 1999 Achievement King, John Naglosky IV, capped his successor, Cook, with a 4-H King cap.

Cook, an eight-year member of the Griffith Grinners, and Hein, a ten-year member of R.P.F.F., were chosen from a pool of eight boys and nine girls.

Hein, a junior leader for six years, has been active in 4-H Demonstrations, Public Speaking, Livestock Judging, Dairy Judging, Club Judging, Share the Fun, Fashion Revue, Action Demo Dairy, and Rabbit and Dairy Showmanship.She has held offices of President, Vice-President, and Secretary and has been involved in Completion Trips, Christmas Party, fundraising, and Program Planning Nominating, Community Service, Floats, and Refreshment committees.

Hein also attended the State Fair Dairy Quiz Bowl, Citizenship Washington Focus, National Dairy Conference, Food Science Workshop, Area Junior Leader Conference, and 4-H Round UP.

Hein was also a 4-H Camp Counselor and Star Camp Counselor, and received the Indiana 4-H Foundation Scholarship, the Schneider Award, 4-H Leadership award, and the I Dare You Award.Hein also started a Mini 4-H Club and was a member of the Queen's Honor Court in 1998 and 1999.

I was very surprised, Hein said on being named queen.I just love 4-H and i have had a really good time here..

4-H members who earned champion ribbons for their fair projects and animals got the chance to strut their stuff at the annual ceremony during the Parade of Champions, and tenure recognition awards were handed out to those who celebrated their final year as 4-H-ers, leading up to the coronation.
